BMW M1
What do you do when you’re tired of Porsche kicking your ass on the race track? What any sensible auto manufacturer should do… build a new super car! From 1978 until 1981 BMW built 456 of their only mid-engine production cars known as the M1. It started off as a collaboration with Lamborghini and ended with BMW shouldering the whole project because of Lamborghini’s lack of cash. The M1 was powered by a 3.5l 6 cylinder that cranked out 273hp in stock form which did have some success in racing. With the addition of turbos these 6′s have been known to make around 850hp! However in 1978, once the M1 was ready to race… it did not meet the new group 5 regulations. For Group 5, you had to have sold 400 production cars before it could qualify. Doh!
