Still Too Fast To Race: Group B Rally Supercars Part 2

You may remember the post about Group B rally supercars early last year. Too Fast To Race was a good documentary about the rise and fall of this legendary class of racing. It seems I've stumbled across a sequel ... Read the rest of this article on DOGFIGHT!

The first documentary was a great watch and I'm looking forward to taking the time to watch this one.

    Many thanks for posting it.

I know one of these days I'm going to regret selling my rusty URQ.

I have an Lancia O37 from that era and yes they are stupidly powerfull and lightly constructed.

Mine's the only right hand drive version the factory had made so it suits our "drive on the left"rules in Australia.

I certainly wouldn't want to have an accident in mine from the survivability rather than the cost point of view.

    Ok, here you go.

You'll notice in the last photo the car is RHD.

We've just completed an engine build as this is an Evo 2 and they ate engines. We're working on changing the inlet manifold so the supercharger breathes into all 4 cylinders not just the front 2.

We're also fitting Motec maagement in an effort to make it hold together.

All mods are non-invasive and can be removed to return the car to originality.

Sweet! I like the Martini livery as well. Bet you can't wait to get it back on the road.

Yes it's been off the road for the best part of 2 years.

The paint is original and has great patina.

This particular car never did anything great. It was used as a test vehicle for NZ and Australian Rallies and ran a couple of low key events so it's in great shape and never been crashed.

I don't rally it (a mate does) as I figure I'm too old and too slow.

That's incredible. Do you have any videos or action shots of your mate driving it? Please excuse my ignorance on these, but did the EVO2's eat engines because of the fact the supercharger only forced to the front 2 cylinders?

Here's a little (very bloody little) of it in action in a demo run during one of our local events.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgGeLgSnpQM

The supercharger forced air into the the manifold directly opposite cylinders 1 & 2 so they took most of the air.

This meant they ran lean and 3 & 4 ran rich.

You would have thought a manufacturer could have come up with a better system.

We welded a baffle into the maniflod and this improved flow so that we got mixtures within a reasonable (but not acceptable) range.

We're working on a new manifold that is fed from one end and is tapered to distribute the air evenly.

Originally they had Kuglfischer mechanical fuel injection but they are near impossible to tune so we went EFI.
