Thread: Should I? shouldn't I? Destroy a '76 Alfetta GT to build........ my dream

  1. #1

Question Should I? shouldn't I? Destroy a '76 Alfetta GT to build........ my dream

Ok, I have owned this 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta Gt since 2004 I tried to sell it a half dozen times to no avail Had lots of tyre kickers and plenty of "do you just want to sell so and so" Me say "Nah buy the whole car for $400" Still no takers

So seeing how its pretty well rusted out now I have been thinking of stripping it of its running gear and building my dream sports car.

I have been infatuated with 1950s italian sports cars for some time so I have been collecting images.

Far and away my favourite is the Cisitalia 202 I first saw one in the flesh (metal) at the 2005 Speed on Tweed event, This really triggered the interest and got me thinking I have a shitty ol Alfa Alfetta GT maybe I could build something similar.

Fast forward to 2010 when I was in the States I saw another at Petersen Museum. I had heard the story of How Pete Petersen bought one in the early 50s and took it to George Barris to be detailed for the Motorama. Little did Pete know Bill Burke convinced George to help pull a fibreglass mould off Pete's Cisitalia coupe. Bill then proceeded to sell Kits Cool to see the two together

Anyway these following pics are of cars that have also influenced me

so I did a couple of quick illustrations to get a feel for what I wanted

I played with a couple of different roof treatments

Since I have previously built a body buck for my Chev roadster I thought this would be the next step.

I will build something along the line of this full body buck.

More than likely I will build a tube frame similar to this

I am only in the planning stages so I possibly won't start work on it until June so I thought I would get other like minded peoples opinions.

    Go for it.

The Alfetta was a great car with awesome suspension, weight distribution and handling.

BTW, there is a Alfa specialist that makes a kit that uses the Alfetta driveline and a TZ style spaceframe and body.
( I think the spaceframe you posted the pic of a a TZ as well )

You could build your own chassis or use theirs as a startingpoint...

Well I guess it is a good concept

Thanks for the input Metalshapes. I have read the Alfetta's were a great handling car.

The pics of the chassis I posted I believe are for a 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SV Zagato Berlinetta

The price of that TZ space frame would be out of my price range and import cost would be high. So I will make my own to suit my needs.

I like a simpler space frame like that used on the Disco Volante

The 1952 1900 Disco Volante has to be the most beautiful Alfa Romeo race car of all time.

I think its a great concept...

I knew a couple of people that had these cars when they were new.

Both 4Dr Sedan and a GT like you have.

I've been along for some hairy rides in them.
( specially the one with a turbocharged 4Dr...)

I never owned an Alfetta untill recently, when I bought one for parts.

Strange yours didnt sell, the wheels & carbs should be worth what you were asking for it...

    But I'm glad they didnt.

I like your plans a lot.

Cant wait to see it happen.

Thanks Metalshapes, your stories have made me glad I didn't sell it. I had originally bought this Alfa to put the running gear in a Hot Rod but it just sat.

When I first bought it I was offered $500 for the mags, I knocked it back as I had no other wheels to fit it. When I had it on ebay I had a constant stream of people asking about individual parts as if I was parting it out. I got sick of it and one bloke asked to buy to carbs and asked for a price so I said $500, didn't hear back from him.

The first step is going to be designing some schematics of the body so I can transfer the measurements to a fullsize buck I may build a 1/10th model so I can see the proportions are what I want.

Hey Stevie, I will continue to update this thread as the build thread.

I am still working on my Chev roadster

& cutting the rust out of my '79 Holden Torana so things will be slow to start with.
