Don't mean to hijack, but here's another one not too many people know about. Built by Dave Masterman of Fresno, CA. This thing was an engineering masterpiece. It was crashed at Phoenix and has been sitting in a barn in a small CA town for 20 years. I first met Dave when he was welding up the chassis for this car. It inspired my career...

You would have to been around Oswego back then. The Hite cars coming in with 4 wheel drive an indpendent suspention ,Jim's own offset car. This rear engine 8 ball was so SIMPLE, the same rear axle, the same frontend parts. the Best semi quote I heard from this time was Bill Hite asking ' Which two wheels have to drive the car'

If you can find a copy of the book, "The Pine", by Andy Fusco, it has Jim's original prints for the wedge roadster, the radical offset roadster, and the rear engine car in it, plus a ton of pictures and description of how the car was put together. The rear engine car had the front torsion bars in two different configurations...it was changed after Jim crashed it in the middle of the season.

Don't the Big "O" supers still use straight axles?

Yes, they are required to by the rules. Independent front suspension was legal until a few years ago, then the rules were changed.
